So you think you can dance? Concord knows it can dance. New Hampshire’s “Dancing Town” has been on its toes, and its toe-ball-heels, since Baryshnikov wore booties! Just one night a year, the capital area’s best dancers show us why dance has become the country’s new pick-me-up, all-ages sport, and TV ratings topper.
On Saturday, Jan. 17, at 7 p.m., the capital area’s Prima Dancers step into the spotlights of the Concord City Auditorium to present the 24th annual dance extravaganza called the “Rhythm of the Night.”
The 2015 show promises to be the biggest and brightest community dance show in the state, with nearly 150 performers. Directors Lisa Drouin Goff of Turning Pointe Center of Dance in Pembroke and Producer David Murdo of Concord lead the cast and crew to present a festive 90-minute family show of 23 acts.
The six featured dance companies include Concord Dance Academy of Concord, Creative Dance Workshop of Bow, Dancesteps Etc. of Epsom, Gen’s Dance Studio of Concord, New Hampshire School of Ballet of Hooksett and Turning Pointe Center of Dance. The schools and their directors – Cindy Flanagan, Bridget Edinger, Joan Kelly, Genevieve Woodward, Jennifer Rienert, and Lisa Drouin Goff – are an important part of The Friends of The Audi, which sponsors the performance.
Every entertainment season, over 2,000 local dance students from 13 area dance companies appear on the City Auditorium stage in inpidual programs ranging from the GALA season opener and student enrichment shows to holiday spectaculars and year-end recitals. With specialties ranging from classical ballet to hip hop, their competition teams regularly win national honors and recognition.
Once a year, for 24 years, the companies join together in one thrilling performance to benefit the continuing upgrades to their home stage, Concord City Auditorium. This year’s show will benefit the LED Lighting Upgrade Project.
Woodward was a Co-Director with Flanagan of the first show in 1992, when her amazing production number danced to the pop hit, “The Rhythm of the Night.”
The “Rhythm of the Night,” a fun-filled way for families to start the New Year on the right foot, is a special gift to Concord audiences. Tickets are just $10, on sale now at The UPS Store on South Main Street and also at the door. The show will last one and half hours with one intermission and is suitable for all ages.
