City Briefly

Each week, City Manager Tom Aspell Duct Tapes the entire perimeter of his office door to keep the draft out, only to realize he’s trapped himself inside. Panicked, he tries to break the door down by ramming it with his shoulder, but all he produces are loud whimpers of pain. Which translate perfectly into a city memo!

Collections delayed a bit

The city’s Spring Leaf Collection Program, which was scheduled to begin April 20, has been delayed due to weather conditions, Aspell writes. Also delayed: the end of your seasonal affective disorder.

A new start date has not yet been determined. The grounds of the sites where the leaves are brought to be recycled are not quite thawed out enough to begin processing leaf piles. Once conditions improve, a new date will be released and collection will begin. In the meantime, ice skating continues!

Residents with curbside trash and recycling collection are encouraged to sign up for “Notify Me” on the city website (concordnh.gov)to be alerted of the new start date.

During the spring leaf collection process, the city’s contracted solid waste vendor collects unlimited amounts of leaves and grass clippings left curbside by residents. Leaves must be placed in  biodegradable yard waste bags or in a labeled, rigid container for easy collection (label suggestion: LEAVES IN HERE, LEAF GUYS!)

No plastic bags containing yard waste will be collected. Bags and/or containers must be placed curbside by 7 a.m. alongside trash and recyclables.Visit concordnh.gov/leafcollection for more information and to watch a helpful video about spring leaf collection.

It’s on, now

Construction stepped up

This week, the Main Street Project will see it’s biggest step forward yet, as it moves into its more permanent construction phase, Aspell writes. Through Wednesday, there will be both north and southbound traffic, as fire hydrant and other utility work will be done in select locations on North Main Street. Come Thursday, however, construction crews will set up the much anticipated (what is this, a blockbuster movie?) permanent work zone, which will consist of the entire side of North Main Street, from Centre Street to Pleasant Street. Beginning Thursday, there will be only one southbound lane of traffic on North Main Street. This configuration will be maintained until the end of June, so it’s not permanent in the dictionary sense of the word, only in the it will feel like forever sense. Free two hour parking on the west side of North Main Street will begin on Wednesday.

It would not be a major project without a groundbreaking ceremony. Aside from all of the actual ground that has already been broken into small pieces. So April 20 at 10 a.m., the city will kick off this monumental project at the Capital Plaza. Speakers will include Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, Congresswoman Annie Kuster, Mayor Pro-tem Dan St. Hilaire, and Jerry Carrier of the Merchants Roundtable. All are welcome to come be a part of this historic moment, which will be immortalized with a picture for the next city time capsule.
