Songweavers spring concert on Saturday

Songweavers a cappella women’s chorus at the Concord Community Music School will present its annual spring concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at the South Congregational Church, 27 Pleasant St. in Concord.

The theme for this year’s concert is “How Can I Keep From Singing?” The chorus will perform with the Songweavers Drummers, led by Grace and Lindsey Schust.

“It’s our human birthright to sing,” said Songweavers director Peggo Horstmann Hodes. “We sing to celebrate and mark events and transitions in our lives: birth and death, hope and struggle, protest and praise. Singing comforts us with connection and community.”

Selections will include Common Ground by the Paul Winter Consort, One Voice by the Wailin’ Jennys and A Song Will Dawn On Me by New Hampshire composer Kathy Lowe. Songweavers will also perform a song titled Tell Them To Sing, written by one of the group’s own members, Justine Paul.

Songweavers is a non-auditioned chorus of women of all ages. Based on the belief that everyone can sing, Songweavers performs music from many ethnic traditions, accompanied by drums and occasional instruments. Songs are learned by ear, and music-reading skills are not expected or required. In its 20-year career, Songweavers has become a spirited voice in the New Hampshire community.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students and seniors. For more information and to purchase tickets, please call 228-1196 or visit ccmusicschool.org.
