Ladies! Here’s your chance to get all glammed up and dance the night away – all for a great cause. After an online vote, Friends Youth Mentoring was named the beneficiary of the 3rd Annual Concord Mom Prom, which will take place May 15 at the Holiday Inn. Tickets are $40 and available at OutFITters on South Main Street or online at concordmomprom.com.
What’s quickly becoming the Capital Region’s premiere girls’ night out, the Concord Mom Prom is a locally-organized event that’s part of a growing nationwide phenomenon. Women dig into the backs of their closets to unearth formalwear they thought they’d never wear again – old prom dresses, bridesmaid dresses and even wedding gowns. Some elect to go vintage and scour local thrift shops or eBay. Really anything goes at this fun and festive evening that benefits a charitable cause.
A handful of Mom Prom enthusiasts headed up by Michelle Myler heard of these events popping up elsewhere and decided to plan Concord’s ultimate ladies’ night out as a way to raise money for local charities.
“Half the fun of the night is seeing all the different dresses – old, new, borrowed,” Myler said. Prizes are awarded for the Best Original Prom Dress, Tackiest Dress and Best Original Wedding Dress.
Myler said that the event’s planners are seeking support from local businesses to donate raffle items, cupcakes and photography. “This keeps costs low so each year we can continue to increase the amount to donate to the chosen organization.”
This year, proceeds will support the Friends Program’s efforts to match at-risk youth with volunteer mentors.
The Friends Program is celebrating 40 years of community service, and its four programs benefit 4,500 children, seniors and families each year. Through its flagship Youth Mentoring Program, over 100 volunteer mentors devote more than 13,000 hours annually to support local youth in nurturing, one-on-one relationships. Despite the name, the Mom Prom isn’t just for moms – all fun-loving women over 18 are welcome. Many of the prom-goers attend in groups, coming to the event with friends, co-workers, sisters – even their own moms, since tickets make great Mothers Day gifts.
Last year’s Mom Prom sold out, and tickets are selling at a brisk rate this year. For more information, call 731-7725, visit concordmomprom.com, or email concordmomprom@gmail.com.
