Somehow dodgeball got a pretty bad rap in schools for a few years, and not just for playing a role in jokes about fat kids. It was part of what we like to call the everyone-gets-a-trophy movement among the over-sensitive adults out there.
Well, Families in Transition and the New Hampshire Coalition to End Homelessness changed all that, and Bishop Brady took part.
FIT and the NHCEH recently hosted the 2nd Annual Dodging Homelessness High School Tournament, featuring dodgeball teams from 15 New Hampshire high schools.
Those 15 teams battled it out in a tournament at Southern New Hampshire University earlier this spring. The event raised almost $2,000 for FIT and NHCEH, which will be put toward housing, programming and scholarships for people who are homeless in New Hampshire, according to a release from FIT.
Bishop Brady wasn’t able to bring home the crown – that went to Londonderry High School – but they were part of a field that also included Bedford, Farmington, Kearsarge, Kingswood Regional, Manchester Central, Manchester Memorial, Manchester West, Merrimack, Newmarket, Newport, Raymond, Salem and Timberlane.
Congrats to the Brady crew of Sam Olson, J.P. Nemcovich, Martin Hecka, Tom MacMullin and Joe Bell, all juniors. Keith Bergeron, dean of students at Brady, said they “will give it a try again next year,” adding, “the tournament was great and the participants showed good competition and better sportsmanship.”
