A Man Called Ove
Fredrik Backman
2014, 337 pages
Fiction
This quirky book features recently widowed, curmudgeonly Ove. For over 40 years his life and personality were balanced by his even-tempered wife, Sonja. With her death, Ove is living a solitary, lonely life which is turned upside down by the arrival of his boisterous new neighbors Parvaneh, Patrick and their children, as well as a free-range cat that adopts him. At a loss with life he decides to commit suicide so he can join Sonja in the afterlife and be balanced once again. Ove’s preparations to kill himself are continuously knocked off track by the interference of his neighbors and the other people who cross his path. Although this sounds depressing, it is a gentle and humorous look at loss and loneliness and how one person can impact so many different lives. Give this a try if you liked The Rosie Project.
