Bishop Brady music roots run deep at upcoming Spring Jam concert

Jeff Dailey of Bishop Brady decided it would be much easier for him to fulfill his years-long quest to attend one of coworker Jason Lane’s concerts if Lane would just play where Dailey already was.

That may or may not be the entire background behind Bishop Brady’s upcoming Spring Jam (it’s not), but it’s a beneficial side effect for Dailey, who helped coordinate what he hopes will be an exciting show March 21 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the Bishop Brady gymnasium.

Tickets are $7 and will benefit the school’s drama program.

“I know Jason pretty well, and I’ve been promising him I would see his band but I’ve never made it out to get to any venues, and then I see (fellow Brady employee Erik Gustafson) coming through the halls, I basically started to think and say, I must not be the only one who wants to see these guys play,”

Dailey said. “I checked with Gus, and he was into it, and I checked with Jason, and it kind of just came out of that.”

The Brady connections at the show run deeper even deeper than that. Lane’s band, The October Sons, will be featured, as will Gustafson, known on stage as Erik “Fingers” Ray. But joining them will be Pat and the Hats, featuring Brady graduates Bob Rice and Pat Gochez, and MC “Darth Hall.”

Even the acts have a background together. Two of the four members of Pat and the Hats were Lane’s students at the school, and a third member was his student at another institution.

“They’re all doing this out of the goodness of their hearts,” Dailey said of the participants. “It came together quick. It’s a way to showcase the talent here in both teachers and students who have graduated and draw some interest that way to the music program.”

Lane has worked at Bishop Brady for about 12 years and has played a handful of shows there, including one with Gochez when Gochez was still a student at Berklee.

“Students get to see a differnet side of me, see what I do when I’m not here – what I’ve been doing for the last 25 years,” Lane, who plays guitar and sings in The October Sons, said.

Tickets for the Spring Jam are on sale at bishopbrady.edu or at the door, and posters with information are up in several places around town, including the Barley House and True Brew Barista.
