Typically, if you were to give your letter carrier some food, he or she would probably eat it (or politely take it and immediately throw it away out of fear you are trying to poison them). This weekend, though, you have the opportunity to hand your letter carrier a bag of non-perishable food and help a handful of those in need at the same time.
The annual Letter Carriers Food Drive, run by the Granite United Way in cooperation with the Capital Region Food Program and others, is slated for May 10. Concord residents are encouraged to leave non-perishable food items in a bag at their mailbox, and the letter carriers will pick it up when they drop off the mail. And don’t worry about putting the flag up on the mailbox (but you probably can if you want to).
It’s a pretty great drive – the letter carriers pick up the food and transport it to New Hampshire Distributors, which was kind enough to offer its facility for sorting. Volunteers recruited to help the CRFP will then sort the food and pack it into boxes, and it will be distributed by CRFP to food pantries and other organizations throughout the area before Saturday is over.
Last year, approximately five tons of food was collected and distributed among 18 food pantries and other groups.
It’s not too late to help, either: if you want to volunteer, contact Val Guy at Granite United Way at 224-2595, ext. 226, or email her at val.guy@graniteuw.org.

Mail carriers do a great job each year. This is added work for them but they do it nontheless. Big shout out for all mail carriers!
