Two Concord public school teachers hosting a hands-on science center at their solar-powered home in Chichester. Starting July 7, junior high students will attend Science and Nature Boot Camp for a one week adventure to study plants and animals with Frank and Wendy Harrison.
Frank teaches biology and chemistry at Concord High School and serves as the Camp Director and Naturalist; Wendy teaches fifth grade at Broken Ground School.
Campers will spend much of the time in a 100-acre mixed habitat just 10 minutes east of the Steeplegate Mall. Their outdoor classroom is shaded by hemlock and birch, dotted with vernal pools and grassy clearings, with a mossy stream nearby.
The kids will identify rare wildflowers and invasive species like purple loosestrife. In a favorite session called Track and Trap, they’ll learn to stalk, net, measure, and safely release some non-endangered species, such as salamanders, garter snakes, butterflies, painted turtles and bull frogs.
Some of these observations will help the statewide Reptile and Amphibian Reporting Program produce charts of species abundance and distribution. The young environmentalists will take some vital signs of the ecosystem too.
