What made you decide to pursue photography as a career?
The power of a photograph is what drew me to photography. Photographs can do so many things – they can change history, they can expose hidden truths, they can bring you into worlds you may never experience otherwise.
What is your favorite/most memorable assignment or photo you’ve taken?
From Concord? Definitely when Ray (Duckler) and I went searching for the site of a 1944 plane crash with three generations of Munroes in Epsom this May. What was supposed to be an assignment that lasted about an hour or two ended up being a six-hour long hike in the woods (in the best way) searching for a piece of history. Ray and I got to know the Munroes pretty well, and though we didn’t find the site, it was one of those stories in which the journey was more important than the destination.
What makes a good photograph?
A good photographer of course! But in all seriousness, a good photograph is one that makes people who look at it feel something. Whether that feeling is empathy, excitement, anger or nostalgia doesn’t matter.
What is the most difficult thing you’ve ever had to shoot?
The most difficult thing I’ve ever had to shoot was officer Steve Arkell’s memorial service in May. It was an incredibly emotional day.
Nikon or Canon?
Canon!
Excluding yourself, who is your favorite photographer of all-time?
There are way too many amazing photographers to choose from! I’d have to put Jodi Bieber, Kitra Kahana and Luis Sinco in there, but they’re three of many.
Do photographers hate having their pictures taken as much as everyone else?
Even more than everyone else. Except if we’re doing something cool. Then shoot away!
What will you miss most about the ‘Monitor,’ besides reading the ‘Insider’ each week?
All of the awesome people I worked with.
Be honest: What advice do you have to improve our ‘Monitor’ column photo?
Top hats or wigs.
If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be?
I have no idea. Before I wanted to be a photographer I wanted to be a veterinarian, but that was more than 10 years ago!
What’s your favorite midnight snack?
Frozen raspberries.
What is your hidden talent?
An amazing sense of direction. If I go somewhere once, I pretty much never need directions again, even years later.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Cookie dough.
