The Seth Wonkka Band is playing at True Brew Barista Feb. 22 at 8 p.m. We asked frontman Seth a few questions. Here’s what he had to say!
What are people in for if they come to your show at True Brew?
We shoot for creating the ultimate folk experience when we play live. We don’t wear flashy clothes or dance around. I write songs about life, love, relationships – songs that everyone can relate to, and my amazing band and I bring those lyrics and songs to life. The passion comes out in the performance and that’s what we want each and every show!
Have you ever played in Concord before? What do you think of our fair city?
We have not yet played in Concord. The producer of our album More Than Him, Brian Coombes of Rocking Horse Recording Studio in Pittsfield, has told us that Concord is the new music mecca of New Hampshire (which according to him has shifted from the Portsmouth music scene over the last few years). We wanted to come up and see if that is true, but from what I see and hear I have no reason to doubt it!
Fill in the blank: If not for ________, you would not be where you are today.
My amazing band/friends, Nouredine Ousmane and Sean Estella. I’d still be doing open mics and singing in my living room. They really have made me believe in my songwriting skills and vocal ability. I owe a lot to these guys. Besides nothing is better than crafting great music with your best friends.
If you could share the stage with one musician or band, who would it be?
Amos Lee, hands down. We saw him live at the House of Blues in Boston, and it just blew us away. His tone is amazing and the songs he writes are just incredible. Pure talent, him and his band.
What is your ultimate goal, musically/career-wise?
Well every musician’s goal is to win a Grammy, of course. Our goal is to keep writing songs that mean something to our fans and listeners. We want to touch people with our words and performances. We’d love to play the Newport Folk Festival and great venues with true listening audiences.
Any other up-and-coming bands from your area we should keep an eye out for?
Baby Made Rebel is a great energetic Boston band and will be playing with us at Tommy Doyle’s in Harvard Square on March 23.
Favorite musical instrument you’ve ever owned/played?
My favorite instrument is my Alvarez MD1000c acoustic guitar. It is super versatile, reliable as can be, and shows the young musicians out there that you don’t need a $5,000 top of the line Taylor acoustic to make great music. Nouredine always prefers an American Fender P-bass and Sean loves his Taye drums, though he dabbles in U.S. vintage stuff on whims.
