City Briefly

Each week, City Manager Tom Aspell puts on his best safari hat, grabs his compass and heads out to walk all of the city’s trails, munching on trail mix all along. We follow close behind and pick up the crumbs, which conveniently spell out the city memo.

rock’N the race

Wellness Team takes part

The city of Concord’s Wellness Team put together its first Rock ‘N Race team to benefit the Payson Center for Cancer Care at Concord Hospital, Aspell writes. A total of 57 employees and family members participated in the 5K race, which is exactly 5Ks more than we generally run at the Insider. The race, selected by the editors of New Hampshire Magazine as the “Best Community Running Event,” is in its 11th year in Concord. No word on who won “Best Community Sitting Event.”

Through 2012, the Rock ‘N Race has raised more than $2.7 million for the Payson Center and, to date, has raised almost $300,000 in 2013.

Shim chance

Construction is happenin’

Continental Paving will start the pavement shim/overlay project this week, Aspell writes. Workers will be shimming streets this week – if they do so in a hole does that make it a shimming pool? – and then will start raising the manhole covers and catch basin grates in preparation for the final overlay.

After the overlay, there will be a two-foot gravel shoulder as needed. Gravel forearms and ankles will cost you extra.

The streets to be paved this year are: Allard Street, Branch Turnpike, Burns Avenue, Christian Avenue, Drew Street, Ellsworth Street, Exchange Street, Gates Street, Grover Street, Hot Hole Pond Road, and Lake Street, as well as sections of A Street (Gates Street to top of rise – 250’) and Canterbury Road (Loudon Road to Pembroke Road).

Crack staff

Sealing stuff up

The crack sealing contractor is continuing as weather permits, Aspell writes. Workers are also installing an expansion joint on the Water Street bridge to allow for more flexibility and to prevent cracking of the new pavement from the expansion and contraction of the bridge. This was only necessary after yoga was insufficient in improving the bridge’s flexibility. They will also be doing this to the Loudon Road bridge joints over Storrs Street next week, weather permitting.
