The Concord Public Library
45 Green St., 225-8670

The Concord Public Library is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the opening of the current building with a photographic exhibit. Ground was broken for the building in August of 1938, and the building opened to the public on Jan. 29.
The library has a collection of photographs that focuses on the construction, what the library looked like when it was completed and how it has changed over the years. View the exhibit during regular hours in January.
Beginning in February, there will be a new book discussion series called “Journeys to the Edge,” which will include books full of adventure and danger.
Brash risk-taking in the untamed frontier is elemental to the American character. We are drawn to travel into harm’s way, enchanted by the unknown, lured to the frontier. “Journeys to the Edge” explores this need. These books put us shoulder to shoulder with men and women who have traveled to the edge, some by choice, others thrust there by circumstance. What is it that they discover?
The programs will be held in the auditorium. Sets of books will be available for check-out at the circulation desk starting Jan. 15.
The discussions include:
– Feb. 8 at 7 p.m: “Into the Wild,” by Jon Krakauer. Led by Suzanne Brown.
– March 15 at 7 p.m: “In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex,” by Nathaniel Philbrick. Led by Jennifer Lee.
– April 13 at 7 p.m: “West with the Night,” by Beryl Markham. Led by Suzanne Brown.
This series is sponsored by the Concord Public Library Foundation and the New Hampshire Humanities Council. The programs are free.
