For a city of just over 40,000 people, Concord has a lot of schools, and the students, teachers and staff members inside those schools are almost always up to something interesting. In this, our inaugural edition of “School Notes,” we tell you what a few local schools are up to:
Forgot your sweater? Don’t worry
The administrative staff at SAU 46 (that’s the district that includes the Penacook schools) is toasty warm this winter, thanks to a new connection to Merrimack Valley High School’s biomass boiler. Since 2006, the school has used earth-friendly wood chips – rather than natural gas – to heat its classrooms. Adding the administrative offices to the system (as well as upgrading the office’s electrical system) is expected to save 43.805 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions a year, according to a press release from the district.
Pizza and pancakes
Dame School’s PTA has a couple of belly-friendly fundraisers planned. The first involves pizza. Lots and lots of pizza. The PTA is selling $10 pizza cards that, when shown at a Domino’s, will get cardholders up to 10 free pizzas during the year, according to the school website. The cards are available in the school office.
As if that’s not enough, the PTA is organizing a pancake breakfast at Applebee’s on Loudon Road on March 13 from 8 to 10 a.m. The cost is $5 per person with a $20 maximum per family. The flapjacks will be served by Dame school staff members.
A big thank you
Eleven Concord High students received kudos last month for participating in the Friends Program. Each of the students worked with a younger kid who came from “an environment that does not always offer opportunities for healthy social and emotional growth,” according to a notice on the high school website. The student volunteers are: Kymm Dennis, Paige Hansen, Katherine Allen, Deanna Cyr, Jameyanne Fuller, Cadence Giles, Mackenzie Lahousse, Amy Lovely, James Mernin, Anna O’Connell and Jaclyn Vignati.
The Friends Program was so pleased that it sent a glowing thank you letter to the school.
Nice job, guys!
