This painting of the former New Hampshire State Prison was made in 1850 by local artist Henry P. Moore.
The piece, being held in storage at the New Hampshire Historical Society, is one of the few images of the prison from the period, according to Wes Balla, the society’s director of collections and exhibitions.
Before the prison was moved to its current location in 1880, it sat on the corner of North State and Tremont streets, which is depicted here. The prison was one of the earliest split granite buildings constructed in New Hampshire.
