That’s a lot of grants
The New Hampshire Charitable Foundation recently announced that it made more than 700 grant awards totaling more than $5.2 million during the third quarter of 2010. So far this year, the foundation has granted $23.7 million.
Highlights include 382 scholarships to help New Hampshire students further their education; a small but important population of which was adult students, for whom there is little access to other types of education funding. Half the dollars, approximately $2.6 million of the $5.2 million awarded, came from donor advised funds.
More than $450,000 went to the Substance Use Prevention Bridge Grant Program.
Additionally, nearly $850,000 resulted from grant decisions made on April applications to the Neil and Louise Tillotson Fund. The quarter also included the Artist Advancement Grant, the largest known grant of its kind to an inpidual artist – $28,000 – to be used as he or she sees fit. Gail Spaien, of Kittery Point, Maine, was this year’s recipient.
The fourth quarter grants report will include results from the fall competitive grant cycle. The next application deadline will be in 2011. Interested applicants should visit nhcf.org.

Think your mac and cheese is the best?
Known as the quintessential comfort food, macaroni and cheese pleases the palate and warms you from the inside out. On Jan. 15, New Hampshire’s dairy farmers will be hosting the state’s first macaroni and cheese bake-off at the Holiday Inn in Concord. The event begins at 2 p.m.
Granite State dairy farmers are on a quest to find those who can turn this classic comfort food into a culinary masterpiece. The competition is open to all who think their dish is worthy of the prestigious grand champion award and the title of New Hampshire’s best macaroni and cheese.
Contestants can enter into one of three categories: Best New Hampshire made mac and cheese (made with 100 percent milk and cheese from New Hampshire dairy producers), best traditional mac and cheese or most creative/exotic. Entries will be judged on texture, taste and overall cheesiness. Each category will have first, second and third place prizes. The winner of each category will move on for their chance to be the grand champion.
As an added bonus, Cabot Cheese has offered to provide free cheese to any contestant entering the bake-off. Using Cabot cheese is not a requirement.
For those who would like to taste and not bake, tickets cost $12 at the door.
Three celebrity judges will include Chef Jeffrey Paige of Cotton Restaurant; Charlie Burke, president of the New Hampshire Farm to Restaurant Connection and New Hampshire dairy farmer Rob Morrill. The winner of the New Hampshire Made category will have his or her recipe featured on Cotton’s menu.
The deadline to enter is Dec. 15. For more information on registration and rules, visit nhdairypromo.org.

Senior doggies and kitties need love, too
The Concord-Merrimack County SPCA is celebrating November as Adopt-A-Senior-pet month. We have healthy senior pets looking for that special person to cherish them for the rest of their life. They don’t ask for much: just a warm place to sleep, good meals and plenty of love.
What do you get when you adopt a senior pet? You get a pet that is usually already trained and doesn’t chew or scratch everything in sight, and a pet that will love you unconditionally. An older animal is easier and still playful. All they really desire is human companionship.
During the month of November, stop by the shelter and get acquainted with our older pets. There’s Herman, a loving German Shepherd; Jodie, a sweet Chow Chow; Jersey Girl, an affectionate feline friend and Dustin, a quiet, gentle cat.
If you are a senior citizen (62 and older) looking to adopt you will qualify for our senior discount. For large dogs like Herman and Jodie, the adoption fee with the senior discount is $25. For any cats that a senior citizen chooses, the fee would be reduced to $25.
For more information, visit concordspca.org or call 753-6751.

Gifts, gab and Gibson’s
“Gifts and Gab” will be held at Gibson’s Bookstore, 27 S. Main St., on Nov. 18 at 6 p.m.
Some people wonder what the best books are to give as gifts. Others wonder what books to suggest for their book clubs. Don’t you wish that your local bookstore could find a way to help you answer all of those questions, over the course of one evening?
Well, wish no more, for Gibson’s has the solution! Our event, a lame pun on the phrase “gift of gab,” will feature representatives from some of the largest publishers in the country.
Scheduled to appear are Ron Koltnow from Random House, John Muse from Simon and Schuster and Deb Woodward, who carries dozens of small publishers, including Candlewick.
Refreshments will be served. For more information, visit gibsonsbookstore.com.
