Concord Hospital Therapeutic Arts and Activities Services has been awarded a grant of $4,500 for an innovative program entitled “Music as a Bridge: Connecting People when Communication is Impaired.”
The grant was awarded by the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, and is made possible by appropriations from the Governor and State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
For the past three years, TAAS has offered live music to Concord Hospital inpatients by certified music practitioners, accomplished musicians trained to use their musicianship therapeutically in a clinical setting. Based on emerging research that recognizes the powerful interaction between the art of music and the science of medicine, these independent practitioners are educated in the physics of sound and its effects on the body and psyche; they are trained in traditional and multicultural approaches to the use of music, and respond improvisationally to help patients experiencing pain, anxiety, muscle tension, etc.
