A Lonely Death

Charles Todd

2011, 343 pages

Fiction

Scotland Yard Inspector Ian Rutledge is sent to the village of Eastfield, near Hastings, on the east coast of England. Three men who had survived the Great War and returned home have been murdered with soldier's identification disks left in their mouths. Rutledge must discover the link between these men before another life is taken. Was it something that happened in the war? Or is there another reason behind these “lonely deaths”?

Rutledge is an interesting character. He himself served in the Great War and suffers from shellshock. He hears his friend Hamish's voice in his head. Hamish was killed in the war, yet Rutledge hears him and can have conversations with him. In fact, Hamish often warns him of danger and helps with the case.

This wonderful historical mystery will keep you guessing.
