We got a great tip from Nordic skiing mom Autumn Van Sice about fellow mom Kate Fox, who sews spandex pants out of wild prints for her snow-bunny daughters. Kate agreed to answer some questions about her stretchy creations and provided some photos of her work.
We hear that you’re a doctor – how do you find the time to sew spandex pants?
Sewing is a form of relaxation – must make time for that.
Where did you get the idea from?
Spandex/lycra has always been a comfortable fabric to wear for athletic endeavors. At the Galloping Gobbler this past year, there was a woman wearing a stunning pair. She told me she made them and that “Spandex World” online was the source of some great prints. So, when I got home, I made a pattern from a pair of lycra tights, Googled Spandex World, and my life changed.
How do your daughters feel about the handmade pants? Do they wear them around all the time?
My daughters love their spandex tights – comfortable for practice, eye catching at Nordic races!!!
What’s the wildest pattern you’ve used?
I thought the fruit print was hilarious, but ones with lots of color and pattern are fun, too.
Tell us about your goals for these spandex pants. A business on Main Street? Product placement on “The Biggest Loser?”
Fun is the name of the game and making people laugh is a goal.
