National Guard Troops
City Manager Tom Aspell, on behalf of the City of Concord, gave a shout out to the state’s National Guard and Reserve troops. In his recent city memo, Aspell writes, “I signed a ‘Statement of Support,’ which is also signed by the secretary of defense and the chairman of the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. In formally signing this statement of support, the City pledges to: 1.) fully recognize, honor and enforce the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA); 2.) provide our managers and supervisors with the tools to effectively manage those employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve; and 3.) continually recognize and support our country’s service members and their families in peace, in crisis and in war.”
Don’t believe him? You can see the proof for yourself: “The statement of support will be framed and displayed in the foyer of my office.”
Too bad
You snooze, you lose
We hate to break it to you, Readers, but according to our buddy Tom, the Recreation Department’s trip to see the Boston Red Sox take on the New York Mets in May is sold out.
But don’t punch a hole through the wall yet – Aspell says the Rec Department will advertise two more trips in its summer brochure, which will go out at the end of April.

Vacation time
T-Spell would like to remind everyone with little kiddies that the Recreation Department will be offering several camps over school vacation week. Tom, we are all over it. Check out our school vacation guide on page 15 for details on the camps happening around town.
Fireworks fund
Aspell is SO not done with the Rec Department news in his ultra-informative memo. He reminds us that the department is continuing its fundraising campaign for this year’s July 4th fireworks show.
Here’s his plea: “Due to fiscal constraints, the cost of the fireworks must be raised entirely through donations. The cost of the show is budgeted for $12,000 and the department has raised half that amount. If anyone is interested in donating to the event, please contact Recreation Director David Gill at 225-8690.”
Okay readers, time to start looking through the couch cushions for change. (Hey, that would add up if everyone scrounged.)
Like basketball?
Looking for something to do tonight? The Concord High School girls’ basketball program is holding a Concord Recreation night on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at Concord High School, according to Aspell’s memo. Looking for a hood turnout, Aspell adds,
“All of the city’s recreation teams are encouraged to attend and root for the Crimson Tide as they take on Bishop Guertin.”
The junior varsity game starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 7 p.m.
In case you’re on the fence about going, we’ll let Tom tell you about the fun things at the event:
“There are some special things happening that evening including a visit from Tidey the Duck, poster making to help cheer on the Concord High School players, a half-time game between two of the fifth/sixth grade girls teams, and free entry into the game if wearing a Concord Recreation basketball T-shirt.”
Yes, the Rec Department is the star of Aspell’s memo, if you hadn’t picked up on that yet.

Hey, thanks!
Aspell must have been filled with gratitude when he wrote this thank-you to the Concord High School girl basketball players. The girls volunteered to referee the department’s third and fourth grade girls’ basketball games each Saturday morning. Tom writes, “Not only do they officiate the game, but they help the girls with skills in the pre-game warm ups. The Concord High School girls are great role models for our players and we appreciate them volunteering.” We’ll second that.

There’s been a lot of do-goodery going on. Aspell proudly points out another couple of groups for their assistance in procuring food pantry donations.
“The Concord Human Services Department is grateful to the participants of the ‘Jumpers and Little Shooters’ basketball programs for donating nonperishable food items for its food pantry. The food pantry is once again fully stocked, thanks to the Recreation Department, who organized the food drive, and to the many families that donated. Additionally, the Recreation Department Senior Program collected money for food for the pantry, as well as many needed items such as peanut butter and juice boxes that always seem to be in short supply. Their generosity is greatly appreciated.”
