Someone thank these volunteers
City Manager Tom Aspell brought to light some volunteerism that warrants mentioning in his weekly city memo. He writes, “On behalf of the Recreation Department, the city would like to express its appreciation to the 82 volunteer youth basketball coaches that donated approximately 1,848 hours of their time to coach the 2008-2009 winter basketball program.” Yikes! That’s a lot of hours. Talk about commitment.
In case you want to be impressed even more, Aspell continues: “This past season, there were 70 youth teams serving children ranging in age from 4–18 years. . . . The time the volunteers gave to the community is valued at over $36,000.”
Nice work, volunteers! You deserve a cookie.
Reminder
Pick this thing up
This is probably more a reminder for us, readers, than it is for you, but Aspell noted that the summer Recreation Department guide has been delivered to all Concord and Penacook schools. You can also check it out online at onconcord.com/recreation. Last year, it took us two months to finally get our hands on a copy. Hopefully we’ll jump to it sooner now that we’ve written about it. Maybe.

Golf course opens
Aspell has good news: “The Beaver Meadow Golf Course Pro Shop and Driving Range will open for business on April 1 for the 2009 golf season.” We don’t know about you, but we’ve been waiting MONTHS to start working on our swing.
Here are some more details, courtesy of Tom: “The Pro Shop will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. until play begins on the course. Staff will be happy to book outings, sell range balls, season permits and gift certificates and discuss the upcoming golf season.” Are you a penny pincher? Check this out: “Once again, all those who bring in a donation of a nonperishable food item between April 1-5 will be provided a free small bucket of range balls. The food items will be given to the city’s Human Services Department.” Bargain!
Speaking of not spending more money, you should know that that 2009 permit rates have not changed from 2008, says Tom. Also, for those who held season permits in 2008, get a friend to sign up in 2009 and they’ll save $100 (must be a new permit holder).

It’s time
Spring cleaning
Now that the snow is gone, leaving dead grass in its wake, it’s time to start raking. To help, the city will conduct spring yard waste curbside collection on Monday, April 6, through Friday, May 8. Here’s what Tom has to say on the matter: “Yard waste will be collected by a separate truck on the same day as residents’ regularly scheduled trash pickup. Biodegradable bags are MANDATORY for this program and must be curbside by 7 a.m.” Got that, readers? MANDATORY. We heard you loud and clear, Tom. Over and out.
Pothole talk
Good news!!!!!
Tom is full of good news this week. He writes, “The Engineering Services Division is pleased to announce the start of construction on the U.S. Route 3 corridor on Monday, March 30. Continental Paving will continue its efforts on completing improvements on the first phase of the project (Fisherville Road from Bog Road to Borough Road).” Tom, are you saying we’re not going to wreck our tires driving to McDonald’s anymore? Are we dreaming?
Aspell continues: “Work is expected to begin on the second phase of the project (Fisherville Road and North State Street from Bog Road to Lake Street) in mid to late April. Message boards were deployed on Wednesday notifying the traveling public of the impending work. Details on actual construction sequencing and work area phasing will follow. Motorists should expect delays during construction and are encouraged to seek alternative routes.”
Tom, we are totally okay with delays. We’ll be thinking of the money we’re saving in tire replacement costs while we sit in traffic.
Who knew?
The city’s bandwagon
We weren’t aware the city was in possession of a bandwagon, or else we would have been on it. (We had to get that one out our system, sorry.)
Take it away, Tom: “Parks sector staff of the Grounds Division has been busy prepping the city’s bandwagon for use. . . . The vintage 1961 Wegner Bandwagon needed some TLC before being sent out this spring for use. . . . Once the repairs are complete, the unit should be fit for another year of band concerts in the parks, speaking presentations, bike races, walk-a-thons and the like.” Neat!
