Homer & Langley
E.L. Doctorow
2009, 208 pages
Setting: New York City, 1900-1940s
Drawing inspiration from the unusual story of the reclusive Collyer brothers, E. L. Doctorow provides an imaginative look at what such lives might have been like. The author takes liberties with the known facts of the eccentric brothers’ lives, yet uses actual historical events to mark their withdrawal from the outer world and to try to understand their compulsion to hoard.
This work of fiction is a wonderfully written narrative that challenges the reader to think about the meaning of lives lived outside the norms of society.
