With the school year about to end, all you students out there are likely looking for something to keep you busy over the next few months.
And if you’re in high school (between the ages of 14 and 18) and like to perform on stage, then Bow High School’s production of The Wedding Singer might just be the thing for you.
While Sarah Evans, choral and theater director at Bow High School, is the one putting on the show, it’s not just for kids who attend the school to Concord’s south. The show is open to current Bow High students (as well as incoming freshmen), Bow alumni and any other student in the area that fits the aforementioned age requirements.
“For the last two years, we’ve done musicals with just our students,” Evans said. “But I thought this would be a great opportunity to invite students from all over the area.”
Now if you never saw the Adam Sandler hit movie, shame on you. It’s one of our favorites about a down-on-his-luck wedding singer who was dumped by his fiancee. What ensues is nothing short of hilarious.
“This is really similar to the movie,” Evans said. “And it’s all 80s pop music.” Including Sandler’s wonderful rendition of “Somebody Kill Me Please.”
Auditions will be held May 29 and 30 (next Tuesday and Wednesday) from 6 to 9 p.m. at Bow High. There will be a dance call (you will be taught the choreography) from 6 to 7 p.m., so as Evans puts it, “wear clothes that you can move in.” The dance portion will be followed by the singing portion of the auditions. This is a musical, after all, so you do need to know how to belt out a few notes.
In order to show off your vocal chords, prepare and memorize a short musical selection “approximately 32 bars” in the style of the show. An accompanist will be provided, so bring sheet music to your audition.
You may also bring a resume/headshot or a list of theatrical/musical/dance experience. The singing auditions will be held by appointment, so email Evans at sarevans@bownet.org to schedule a time.
You just need to go to one of the two auditions, and those chosen from the first round will be invited to call-backs on May 31 from 5 to 9 p.m. The callback list will be posted on the website by midnight on May 30, so no need to constantly hit refresh all night. Callbacks will include cold readings and singing from the score.
Evans said she’s looking for about 25 to 30 kids to fill out the eight major roles and the large ensemble, so there are lots of opportunities.
“A lot of roles come out of the ensemble,” Evans said.
Rehearsals will be held primarily on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning Sunday, June 3 at 7 p.m. Shows will be held Aug. 2 and 3 at 7 p.m., Aug. 4 at 2 and 7 p.m., and Aug. 5 at 2 p.m., just so you know and don’t have a family vacation planned that week.
Tech week rehearsals will be held July 29 through Aug. 1. All performances and tech week rehearsals are mandatory.
There will be a $50 student activity/production fee for everyone cast in the show. For more, visit bowperformingarts.com.
