Art historian Cristina Ashjian will give a lecture at the Pierce Manse on Thursday evening entitled “Exemplary Country Estates of New Hampshire.”
In the early 20th century, the New Hampshire Board of Agriculture launched a program to boost the rural economy and promote tourism through the sale of abandoned farms to summer residents.
After introducing the country house movement, Ashjian focuses attention on some of the great country estates featured in the New Hampshire program between 1902 and 1913. She’ll answer one very important question: Which private estates were recognized as exemplary, and who were their owners?
Part of the Brigade Lecture Series, the talk begins at 7 p.m. and is sponsored by New Hampshire Humanities.
The lecture series is held on the fourth Thursday of each month at 7 p.m., March through October at the Pierce Manse. Programs are free and open to the public, but seating is limited.
On June 22, Sarah Galligan, library director at the N.H. Historical Society will give a talk, “The White Family of Concord.”
