We noticed last week that we hadn’t burdened ourselves with the chore of trying a beer for work since August, so we felt we were long overdue.
We stopped by the Barley House last Wednesday afternoon to see what was on tap, since we hadn’t been there since March and wanted to try something new. One option really caught my eye – Mayflower porter.
The beer menu at Barley House contains a little bit of information about all of the beers on tap, and it said this one was rated 4.17 out of 5 by Beer Advocate, the second-highest rating on the draught menu. Also, Mayflower Brewing Company is out of Plymouth, Mass., which just so happens to be a few minutes from my hometown, so I gave it a shot, having never tried any of Mayflower’s beers before.
This porter is almost black – no light at all passes through it – and I’m a big fan of dark beers, so I couldn’t wait to try it.
The first sip was very smooth, creamy and a little toasty. It wasn’t the toastiest (is that a word?) beer I’d ever tried, but it was definitely a noticeable flavor.
At 5.5 percent alcohol by volume, this beer is right in the sweet spot, where it’s not too strong and not too weak. The smooth texture paired with the medium alcohol content make it a very pleasant beverage to drink. It also is surprisingly light, so it’s not hard to sip down.
I’m tempted to say it’d be a great drink for breakfast – well, I guess I just said it.
