Western author at Gibson’s on Thursday
On Thursday, Robert Olmstead visits Gibson’s Bookstore to present his newest Western, Savage Country at 5:30 p.m.
In September 1873, Elizabeth Coughlin, a widow bankrupted by her husband’s folly and death, embarks on a buffalo hunt with her estranged and mysterious brother-in-law, Michael. With no money, no family, no job or security, she hopes to salvage something of her former life and the lives of the hired men and their families who depend on her. The buffalo hunt that her husband had planned, she now realizes, was his last hope for saving their land.
Elizabeth and Michael plunge south across the aptly named Deadline demarcating Indian Territory from their home state, Kansas. Nothing could have prepared them for the dangers: rattlesnakes, rabies, wildfire, lightning strikes, blue northers, flash floods, threats to life in many ways.
They’re on borrowed time: the Comanche are in winter quarters, and the cruel work of slaughtering the buffalo is unraveling their souls. They must get back alive.
This is a gripping narrative of that infamous hunt, which drove the buffalo population to near extinction – the story of a moment in our history in which mass destruction of an animal population was seen as the only route to economic solvency. But it’s also the intimate story of how that hunt changed Michael and Elizabeth forever.

Rake those leaves to the curb soon
Concord’s annual fall leaf collection will begin on Monday, and continue through Dec. 8, as weather permits.
Concord and Penacook residents participating in the program must rake their leaves (un-bagged) to the curb for crews to collect. Residents should have leaves ready to the curb by the start of the program.
Concord General Services will have three crews collecting leaves throughout different areas of the city.
Once collection starts, our fall leaf collection map will become available.
Leaves are the only acceptable material that will be collected.
Visit concordnh.gov/leafcollection for more.

Take part in ancestor workshop
Creating Community – a place to gather over shared interests, education and resources, with a focus on arts, culture, diversity and inclusion – is pleased to announce some exciting upcoming events:
In the spirit of All Souls and Day of the Dead celebrations, you are invited to honor your ancestors by contributing to the Creating Community Ancestor Shrine. The growing interest in genealogy speaks to a need many of us feel for connection to our ancestors and of our desire to know and honor those who have gone before us. Several traditions hold that the days around Nov. 1 are the best time for ancestor celebrations, as this is the time of year when the veil between the physical and spiritual worlds is the thinnest.
There will be a drop-in workshop, How to Create Shrine Offerings, on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drop in for a tutorial on how to create offerings, milagros and messages for the shrine.
On Nov. 1 and 2, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., all are welcome to participate in Creating Community’s ancestor event by adding ancestor photos, mementos, offerings, messages and prayers to our shrine.
