With winter just around the corner – if it’s not officially here already – you might be in the market for some new gear for all your cold weather activities.
But it can be expensive to procure new skis, boots, skates and hockey equipment, especially with the holidays right around the corner. And odds are it’s not like anyone is going to buy you the right thing anyway.
So we have a solution: This Saturday, get in your car, drive to Steeplegate Mall and go to the Capital Ski & Outing Club’s annual ski and skate sale. There you will find Nordic and alpine skis, snowboards, ski and snowboard boots, skates, sleds, snowshoes, hockey sticks and outdoor clothing – like hats, gloves and goggles.
“There will be a lot of stuff,” said Cheryl Haydon, president of the club.
Pretty much anything you can think of when it comes to outdoor fun, it will be there and for sale.
Doors open at 9 a.m. for the one-day extravaganza and don’t be surprised to see quite the line before people are allowed in. This sale has been going on for a lot of years and people really look forward to it – and the deals. Don’t worry though, we’ve been assured that there will be lots of stuff to buy.
“Before I was a volunteer, I used to go line up at 7 a.m.,” Haydon said. “And there will be a long line.”
In addition to about a dozen dealers, the public is allowed to drop off their own personal equipment that they’ve outgrown or don’t need, to be sold. It just needs to be clean and in good condition, and yours, of course.
People dropping off equipment just need to fill out a form, where they can set their own price, but it will be a good deal no matter what. The sale runs until 2 p.m.
Items can be dropped off on Thursday, from 4 to 7:30 p.m., and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. The contingent of volunteers will look it over and make sure it meets the criteria and even help set a price.
“We make sure everything is safe and good,” Haydon said.
On Sunday, those who dropped off items to sell, should return between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. to pick up any unsold items or to receive a check from the club. For each item sold, the club gets 20 percent of the sale.
“They need to come back Sunday regardless,” Haydon said.
The club is also still looking for volunteers, so email concordskiskatesale@gmail.com if you’re interested. Volunteers work in four-hour shifts, but also get to attend the presale on Friday night.
“We have shifts on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday,” Haydon said.
And just a reminder, the sale is being held in the old Circuit City at Steeplegate Mall. For many, many years it was held at the Green Street Community Center, but moved east last year.
“We needed a larger space, more parking,” Haydon said. “It’s probably three or four times the space. It’s quite large.”
