Book of the Week: ‘Scarlet’

Scarlet

A.C. Gaughen

2012, 292 pages

Young adult fiction

Scarlet is a retelling of the legend of Robin Hood, with a secret. It’s the account of how John Little, Robin Hood and Will Scarlet live, breathe and love in the fight to save the people from the greedy Sheriff of Nottingham – by stealing from the rich to give the money to the poor so they aren’t taxed out of their homes.

The main character has a unique voice that adds to the flavor of this fast-paced adventure story. Scarlet has a lot of secrets, and secrets have a way of coming out just when they’ll do the most damage. When a person from her past shows up threatening to reveal too much of the truth, it’s up to her to navigate a way through the tangle of lies, omissions and half-truths she’s woven with her knives before everyone she cares for ends up dead.
