If you haven’t noticed, the work on South Main Street is starting to wrap up, which means a couple things.
For starters, you won’t have to try and remember which way you can drive on it. Nothing says bad day like trying to travel on a closed road. And soon it will look all shiny and new like North Main.
On Thursday, there will be a closing ceremony to celebrate the completion of the entire Main Street project that has been two full tanning seasons in the making.
While it is being billed as a closing ceremony, we’re glass half full kind of guys so we prefer the term opening ceremony, but to each their own.
Now what can you expect at this little ceremony? Well, it means the biggest construction project in recent history is now complete, so its time to celebrate.
The ceremony begins at 4 p.m. at city plaza with Mayor Jim Bouley welcoming everyone and the Concord High School marching band playing the national anthem. There will also be some pretty important Concord people there.
At 4:20 p.m, the New Hampshire granite, commemorative medallion at City Plaza will be unveiled along with the ceremonial ribbon cutting. That will be followed by a procession down North Main to South Main for the official opening of the redone section of downtown.
That means you will be able to drive both ways on South Main and no longer need to be an expert on side street navigation to get around.
Following all the hoopla on the street, a family-friendly reception at the Capitol Center for the Arts will be held. There will be cookies, cider and apples, and music, and it’s free and open to everyone.
