Now that the calendar has officially turned to October, it’s time to start thinking Halloween.
You’ve got time to sort out your costume, but if you want to get in on the fall decorating, you better grab a few pumpkins. And lucky for all of you, we found a number of places in Concord and Bow to get one.
Rossview Farm
Rossview Farm (85 District 5 Road #5), which got back into the pumpkin game this year after a few years off, has lots of them to choose from. You can walk into the field and pick-your-own and then weigh it at the farm stand. Owner Don Ross opens up the field for people to choose their own for the experience of it.
For the traditional jack-o’-lantern pumpkins, as well as the white ones, the cost is 50 cents a pound. The New England cheddar pumpkins, sugar pumpkins and butternut squash are 65 cents a pound. They’ll even have foliage hay rides this weekend.
Carter Hill Orchard
Since Carter Hill (73 Carter Hill Road) grows its pumpkins on a piece of land across town, they cut them all and bring them to the farm stand, although you still get to choose which one you take home. The large pumpkins are $8.50 each, while smaller ones are $5. Sugar pumpkins are $2.50 apiece.
Bow Mills Church
Beginning today (Oct. 4) and through Halloween, Bow Mills United Methodist (505 South St.) will host its 12th annual pumpkin patch. More than 1,000 pumpkins will fill the lawn of the church after a tractor trailer load was dropped off, with prices running from $1.50 to 3 for the small ones, and $4 and up the bigger you get.
The patch is open Monday through Friday, 3 to 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 6.
Apple Hill
Don’t let the name fool you, because Apple Hill (580 Mountain Road) is also an option for pumpkins.
They pick them from the field, bring them up to the farm stand and even put a price on each one so you’re not surprised at the register. It’s 50 cents a pound for jack-o’-lantern ones, and $1 a pound for the sugar pumpkins.
Lewis Farm
At Lewis Farm (192 Silk Farm Road), it’s a pretty laid-back atmosphere. The farm doesn’t explicitly offer pick-your-own pumpkins, but owner James Meinecke said that if someone wants to go through the patch and pick their own, that would be fine – just make sure to call ahead first (228-6230) before heading to the farm.
Once you’re there, you’ll see all the usual suspects – jack-o’-lantern pumpkins, little sugar pumpkins for eating, cute white pumpkins for painting. When you pull up to the farm stand, you’ll see a metal rack with some nice ones on display. There may even be a few inside the stand, hiding away from the elements.
Dimond Hill
Dimond Hill (314 Hopkinton Road) doesn’t grow its own pumpkins, but brings them in from a New Hampshire farm. They take the guess work out of picking the size because the large ones are $8.50, the sugar pumpkins are $2.50 and the small decorative ones are $1.99.
