If you missed the first few installments of the Pierce Brigade Lecture Series, it’s okay. There’s still more to come over the next few months.
And it all starts Thursday with a talk by Kevin Gardner, an author, stone wall builder, teacher and professional actor, entitled “Discovering New England Stone Walls.”
Why are we so fascinated with stone walls? Gardner, author of The Granite Kiss, explains how and why New England came to acquire its thousands of miles of stone walls, the ways in which they and other dry stone structures were built, how their styles emerged and changed over time and their significance to the famous New England landscape. Along the way, Gardner will occupy himself by building a miniature wall or walls on a tabletop, using tiny stones from a five-gallon bucket. Who knew you could build a stone wall on a table?
And that’s not all. Julie Westgard Cole will give a talk on Sept. 22, “Beyond a Preacher, a Princess, and a President in Old North Cemetery.”
On Oct. 27, “New Hampshire’s Grange Movement: Its Rise, Triumphs & Decline,” will be discussed by Steve Taylor, an independent scholar, farmer, journalist and public official.
And to close out the season, there will be an official remembrance of Franklin Pierce’s Birthday with a wreath laying at Old North Cemetery by the N.H. National Guard on Nov. 22 at 10 a.m.
All programs are free and open to the public.
