You have to be at work by 8 a.m., but your work is 45 minutes away. Little Johnny has to be at school in Concord at 8:10. What do you do?
Well, if your child goes to Rundlett Middle School, you can now drop them off right there, starting at 7:15.
The Concord Family YMCA and Rundlett have teamed up to provide a new and totally free before-school program for middle school students.
The Rundlett school day doesn’t officially begin until 8:10 a.m., but that doesn’t mean kids aren’t dropped off early. In the past, early-arriving students would mingle outside the school unsupervised until the doors opened.
Now there will be supervised activities offered from 7:15 until the start of the school day. Kids will do things like arts and crafts, jewelry making and active games.
“We wanted to give kids a positive option before school starts, and make it available to all,” said Deborah Galipeault, youth services director at the Y.
She said that in the past, it was not uncommon to see upwards of 50 students hanging out outside waiting for school to open. Now those kids will have somewhere to be with something to do.
“The intent is for it to be very structured, engaging and inviting,” Galipeault said.
