If you haven’t figured it out by now, last week was quite the scorcher, and we’re not huge fans of blistering heat. Why do you think we chose to live in New Hampshire?
But heat in the summer is just part of life, just like snow in the winter. Doesn’t mean we just stay in and wait until the weather changes to our perfect temperature, humidity and atmospheric pressure conditions – which could take all of eternity.
Instead, we find ways of dealing with it. Last week, we chose to deal with the heat by drinking a nice summer beer at Tandy’s. After all, an excuse to drink is an excuse to drink. Bonus points if that excuse includes the phrase, “I have to work.”
We went in knowing right off the bat that we wanted a summer beer. It was way too hot for a thick, rich, syrupy stout or porter (which I usually go for). Sam Summer is so cliche, so we opted for Red Hook Summerhook Golden Rye Ale instead.
This beer, as you might imagine, is light, crisp, refreshing and easy to drink. It seemed like the perfect beer to sip on the porch or in the backyard, even though we weren’t tough enough to drink at Tandy’s outdoor patio. Unlike most summer beers, there’s no strong fruit taste, just hints of citrus.
At 4.7 percent alcohol by volume, this one won’t knock you off your stool. In fact, you can put a couple together and still be pretty good (but never drink and drive, even if you only had one). It’s a perfect session beer that you should try this summer.
