We have no doubt that the football coaches in this area are good. Just look at some of the success the high school teams have had over the years.
But there’s no substitute for learning the game from a former professional athlete – especially one that played for the New England Patriots.
So if you’re between the ages of 9 and 14, that’s exactly what you can do May 13. Concord Parks and Rec, in conjunction with the New England Patriots Alumni Club, will host a free non-contact clinic for local boys and girls. And while we typically stay away from doing just about anything on Friday the 13th, we’d make an exception for this one.
“It’s 100 percent free, and free is good,” said Concord Parks and Rec Director David Gill.
The three-hour camp is at Memorial Field and will be done mostly under the lights to give the players a little look into their future if they stick with the game.
“I think it makes it a little more special,” Gill said.
The camp, which is called Football For You, is broken down into six stations where each child will learn all the different positions on the field. The former Patriots will also talk about healthy eating, creating an active lifestyle and hard work. They will also feed the players.
“Kids that play football are invited, and kids that don’t play football are invited,” said Pete Brock, president of the Patriots Alumni Club. “We want to have 300 kids at this thing, running around the football field.”
There will be seven retired Patriots helping with the camp, along with coaches from Concord High and Bishop Brady.
The camp begins at 6 p.m. and registration starts at 5 p.m.
