McGowan Fine Art and Mill Brook Gallery & Sculpture Garden are hosting artist receptions this week to officially open their latest shows.

McGowan is celebrating the opening of its exhibit, “Matthew Brown and Students,” with an artist reception on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m.

The show, which officially opens today and runs through May 27, features woodblock prints created by Brown, Annie Bissett, Ginger Greenblatt, Hannah Phelps, Richard Sabin, Sandy Wadlington and Jennifer Worsley.

Brown has been teaching workshops on the hanga technique of woodblock printing since 1995. Hanga is an old technique that refers to printing by hand with water, rice paste and pigments from multiple carved blocks.

“This exhibit is designed to offer insight into the wonderful conversations and exchange of ideas these classes have inspired,” said Brown.

Several of the students work in a style that is quite naturalistic and feels similar in genre to Matt Brown’s prints.

This artist reception is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.

On May 7, Brown will be presenting a short history on the technique of hanga woodblock printing, from 11 a.m. to noon at McGowan. This presentation is free and open to the public.

Gallery hours are Tuesday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or by appointment. For more information, call 225-2515 or visit mcgowanfineart.com.

On Thursday, Mill Brook Gallery & Sculpture Garden will host its artist reception for its first official show of 2016, “Spring Celebration.”

The exhibit includes the work of sculptor Andy Moerlein, and painters Janet Huling Bleicken, Jane Cohen, Ella Delyanis, Tamara Gonda, Ginny Joyner, Debbie Kinson, Dustan Knight and Fleur Palau.

You can meet the artists at Thursday’s reception from 5 to 7 p.m., and learn a little bit more about the show and the gallery.

Spring Celebration will be on display through June 26.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and by appointment.
