Songweavers to put on a show for 25th anniversary

Who doesn’t love hearing some good, live music?

There are always plenty of options for that in Concord, but it’s not often that you get to hear a special, 25th anniversary performance like you do this Saturday.

This happens to be the 25th year of the Songweavers, and the singing group is putting on a big show to celebrate.

On Saturday at 7 p.m., the Songwevers will take the stage at South Congregational Church, 27 Pleasant St., to sing many of their classic hits, including the “Power Chant” as well as some bonus tunes.

The Songweavers played the first installment of their anniversary celebration in Derry on April 3, and Saturday’s show will feature everything from that show and more.

There will even be some special guests, most notably Desire Kiruhura, a new American from Congo who will be leading the group on a song he brought with him from his homeland.

The song is not in English – Kiruhura is still getting the hang of the language – but the Songweavers learned it by ear.

The song is very upbeat, and it’s about God always watching over all of us all the time. At rehearsal last week, the whole group really got into the song, and Kiruhura was a natural up there in front, reminding the singers of the verse changes.

Before we give away the whole show, you should know a little about the Songweavers first.

Housed at the Concord Community Music School, the group began a quarter-century ago “as a club for women who couldn’t sing,” said Peggo Hortsmann Hodes, director of the Songweavers.

“The very first semester, there were just six people,” she said. But the next thing you know, “this thing just took off.”

The focus is community building, not becoming a super-famous pop star (though that it not explicitly discouraged), so anybody can join without feeling like they need to be world-class musicians, Hodes said.

Anyone interested in joining the next semester should call 228-1196.

Tickets for Saturday’s show, which are $20 for adults and $15 for students and seniors, are available at ccmusicschool.org.
