Night of the White Buffalo
Margaret Coel
2014, 290 pages
Fiction
A white buffalo calf is born on the Broken Buffalo ranch owned by Dennis Carey and his wife. They are a white couple who for some reason never hire Native American help. The white calf is extremely rare and sacred to the Arapahos, and thousands flock to see it.
In the Arapaho culture, the white calf means that the spirit has come to be with its people, an amazing blessing. But Dennis Carey is shot to death shortly after this miracle.
Arapaho lawyer Vicky Holden and her friend Father John O’Malley are both wondering about some other strange happenings at the Broken Buffalo Ranch. Where have three white cowboys disappeared to; have they just moved on? Their friends are looking for them. And who murdered Dennis Carey and why?
Woven into this exciting mystery is information about the Arapaho people and their beliefs. The story has a great sense of place and likable main characters. It can be read on its own, but if you like it there are more than a dozen Wind River mysteries to try.
