It’s spring, which means baseball season is finally under way.
For many of us, last year was one to forget in terms of baseball. But it’s a whole new season now, and anything is possible.
If you want to get your kids into the game at a young age, you should check out Petey Porcupine Rocks the Sox, a new kids’ book written by Dunbarton author Franklin Black.
The story follows Petey Porcupine, who lives in the White Mountains and dreams of seeing a baseball game at Fenway Park. He’s bummed out to hear that only birds have the ability to catch games, but he doesn’t give up on his dream.
He’s able to somehow talk his friends, the trees, into flying him out of the forest. He lands in a parking lot, an environment Petey sees as a ledge marked with lines.
After dodging some careless cars (or bears that walk on round feet, to Petey), he encounters some school kids about to get on a bus – which is headed to Fenway.
Two of the kids – Carlos and Bethy – carry him to Fenway in a backpack.
Once in the park, Petey ends up playing a pretty big role in the game. You’ll have to read it to see what happens!
Black said the inspirations for the story were the 2013 World Series champion Red Sox, a porcupine he saw in a tree during that season and his niece.
