Shot at the Kimball-Jenkins Mansion in Concord, The Priest was shown at the Somewhat North of Boston Film Festival this year.

CATCH Neighborhood Housing receives grant

CATCH Neighborhood Housing has received a $10,000 grant from the Lincoln Financial Foundation in support of their collaborative housing education program, HOMEteam.

As a partnership between CATCH, NeighborWorks Southern New Hampshire and the Laconia Area Community Land Trust, HOMEteam provides residents throughout southern and central New Hampshire with a variety of tools and information related to purchasing, renting and maintaining a home. This grant will help HOMEteam continue to provide high-quality workshops, one-on-one counseling, financial fitness training and other resources to support first-time home buyers and homeowners.

So far in 2015, HOMEteam has hosted 415 families in its various workshops and assisted with 120 home purchases. Counselors are currently working with 36 families facing foreclosure across the state. With assistance from the Lincoln Financial Foundation, HOMEteam will be able to continue these critical services to the residents of New Hampshire.

CATCH Neighborhood Housing is an award-winning, nonprofit, housing provider that has been providing affordable homes in Merrimack County for 25 years. CATCH offers a full spectrum of housing services, such as homebuyer education, housing counseling and foreclosure assistance through HOMEteam NH (hometeamnh.org), asset and property management through Alliance Asset Management (alliancenh.com) and 284 affordable rental apartments that over 600 low-income adults and children call home.

Christmas Eve service at East Congregational

East Congregational United Church of Christ, located on 51 Mountain Road in Concord, will gather for a Christmas Eve Candlelight Service of Worship and Celebration on Thursday at 7 p.m. with lessons, carols, special music by members of the East Church Choir, directed by Susan Goulet, and sacred dance from Sarah Lowry, as well as a Christmas message from the Rev. Michael Lowry, pastor of the congregation.

All are welcomed to share in this joyous celebration.

Fun events coming up at the Concord Library

With the holidays around the corner and schools wrapping up for the year, the Concord Public Library has a bunch of stuff for the kids over the next week.

On Wednesday, the library will host Kid Craft, a DIY Fireplace, from 11 a.m. to noon. Make your own fireplace for decoration or to hold a gift.

On Dec. 29, there will be children/family movie time from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Discover the back story of the funny yellow creatures featured in Despicable Me – their origin, their evolution through the centuries and their ultimate mission. Wear a Minions movie costume if you’d like and enjoy some fun, themed snacks.

And on Dec. 30, from 2 to 3 p.m., meet some reptiles up close and personal when Reptiles on the Move visits the library. Seating is limited, so free tickets are required and are available now.

Discovery Center will be open extended hours

The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center will be open every day Dec. 26–31 from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for Christmas week. The Discovery Center will offer special science workshops for kids ages 8 to 12 during the holiday break, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On Dec. 28, It’s a Nano-World – a full day of hands-on activities and experiments to explore the science of the very small and learn how nanotechnology is shaping our lives today.

On Dec. 29, Mindstorms Challenge – participants in this one-day workshop dive into the basics of coding and robotics, building a roving robot using LEGO Mindstorms.

And on Dec. 30, Winter Blast-Off – kids test a variety of rockets, seeing which modifications make rockets go the farthest. Weather permitting, there will be an outdoor rocket launch at the end of the day.

General admission is $10 for adults, $9 for students and seniors, $7 for kids 12 and under, and free for members and kids under 3. Workshops are $60 each.

The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center is also celebrating the new Star Wars movie opening with a Star Wars-themed Christmas tree on display through Jan. 10 – to its knowledge, the only tree made from X-Wing Fighters in the world – and a display of Star Wars memorabilia.

Six-week VNA Caregivers program begins Jan. 5

Concord Regional VNA is offering “Powerful Tools for Caregivers,” a six-week program that empowers family caregivers of adults to take better care of themselves. The program takes place on Tuesdays beginning Jan. 5 from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Wesley United Methodist Church, 79 Clinton St. in Concord.

Learn tools to help reduce stress, improve caregiving confidence, establish balance in your life, communicate your needs, make difficult decisions and locate helpful resources.
