We understand you’re having a hard time coming to grips with the fact that it’s November and those carefree summer days are a far distant memory. But fall isn’t so bad, except for when you focus on the cold nights, frosted windshields and raking all those once-vibrant leaves.
So instead of dwelling on the fact that hibernation is right around the corner, embrace the precious moments of fall we have left and the ability to stay outside for longer than it takes to walk from your house to the car.
’Cause if you take our advice, you’ll be doing a lot of those walks this weekend when you’re hopping around town as part of N.H. Open Doors. And just think, it will get you in perfect shape for the mad dashes needed to escape the snowy weather this winter.
Shops, galleries, farms and artists all over the Granite State will be taking part in the annual N.H. Open Doors, a statewide shopping and touring event. And even though we don’t cover all of New Hampshire, there’s plenty to do right here in Concord. There’s even a conveniently put together walking tour of downtown that ends with a short drive.
The first stop includes a bead weaving demonstration at Bead It! (146 N. Main St.) and continues with a trip to the studio of Laura Morrison and Gail Smuda at 88 N. Main St., Suite 206, where some of Morrison and Smuda’s work and collaborations will be on display.
The League of N.H. Craftsmen store (36 N. Main St.) will have plenty to look at and buy, but also an artist demonstration from noon to 3 p.m. each day. Kristin Kennedy Fine Jewelry (30A Warren St.) is the next stop where you can check out Kennedy’s one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces.
The League of N.H. Craftsmen headquarters and gallery will have a didgeridoo demonstration by Steven Bachmann along with the opportunity to peek into the studios of Tom McGurrin. Dan Dustin, Beth Lux, Bob Dorr and Elena Wikstrom.
And if you’re using this as a guide to your trip around Concord this weekend, you now have to make the long walk back to your car. Once there, start it and head to Mill Brook Gallery and Sculpture Garden for a look at the three indoor gallery spaces and the ever popular outdoor sculpture exhibit. Just make sure you obey all traffic laws.
N.H. Open Doors will take place both Saturday and Sunday, but every participant makes their own hours. So for a complete rundown of who’s taking part, both in Concord and around the state, visit nhopendoors.com. Click on the itineraries tab for a closer look at the Concord walking tour.
