Watch for load limit signs on Concord streets

The city of Concord has begun posting “No Trucking – Load Limit 9 Tons” signs to prepare for the spring thaw. The spring thaw refers to when the temperatures fluctuate and the roads begin to melt any ice frozen underneath the asphalt (forming frost heaves in the winter), thus contracting roads back down and causing cracks and breaks in the pavement. This weakens the road structure and eventually potholes can form.

The City of Concord limits heavy weight on the roads during the spring thaw to prevent any further road damage than what already naturally occurs from frequent thawing and freezing cycles that are typical this time of year.

The load limit positing is weather and road condition dependent, but will likely remain in place into April. Restrictions will continue as long as conditions require. Please visit concordnh.gov/springoperations for more information and for a map and list of the roads that will be posted in Concord. The City of Concord does not provide permits for spring load limits, but drivers can call Concord General Services at 228-2737 to request for travel permissions of one to two loads before noon.
