On Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. in the Library Living Room, NHTI will present the next in its series of free Wings of Knowledge lectures for the 2014-15 season: “Acadia National Park Historic Bridges Rehabilitation.”
The presenters are Timothy Bryant, P.E., Director of Structural Engineering, and Robert Blunt, P.E., Project Manager at VHB, Inc., an East Coast engineering firm with offices from Maine to Florida. Bryant and Blunt will discuss the challenges involved in the rehabilitation of 29 Carriage Road bridges and 13 Motor Road bridges within Maine’s historic Acadia National Park. Other projects they have undertaken within the park involved rehabilitation of Carriage and Motor roads, additional bridge rehabilitations, scour and slope erosion studies, a bike path project and parking improvements.
Launched in 2001-02, Wings of Knowledge is an annual series of cultural events presented by the college. All events are free and open to the public. The series supports and expands upon NHTI’s wide variety of academic offerings, and is another element in the college’s expanding community college mission. Subsequent events in the series will include: March 3, Designer Lynn Szymanski presents a program on furniture made in New Hampshire; April 7, Culture in Many Societies – An NHTI foreign student shares insights of home and culture; April 28, Kevin Gardner – Gardner’s talk will cover a few of the main topics of his book about New England stone walls, The Granite Kiss (Countryman Press), touching on history, technique, stylistic development and aesthetics.
