The only healthcare issue on the minds of some young adults is having access to cough drops at the local pharmacy. But about 19 million young adults across the country lack basic health insurance coverage. While young people are often healthy, they do need medical care for preventive treatment, regular check-ups and occasional office visits.
For the young adult population, the Affordable Care Act promises to make health care affordable and accessible. Already, more than 3 million previously uninsured young adults have joined their parent’s health insurance plan. The good news is that people are now able to shop for coverage on the online Health Insurance Marketplace, where they can compare plans side-by-side, and learn how discounts through a new kind of tax credit can lower their costs. In the Concord area, certified consumer assisters from several local non-profit organizations are collaborating to provide opportunities for anyone who is uninsured or underinsured to receive one-on-one assistance with health insurance enrollment through the Health Insurance Marketplace. Working with the NHTI Health Services Department, they have two upcoming enrollment dates scheduled for students and the public: March 11, from noon to 2 p.m.; and March 26, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.; both in Grappone Hall, room 218.
“The Healthcare.gov website is functioning much better now, and the March 31 enrollment deadline is looming. This is a great opportunity right on campus for young adults to get the facts about how they can get health care coverage that fits their particular needs and budget,” said Marilyn Sullivan, project coordinator and N.H. navigator, Bi-State Primary Care Association. “It is more affordable than many young people think, because they could be eligible for tax credits and subsidies that reduce the cost of their coverage. Getting covered keeps young adults healthy and protects their financial security against unexpected costly health events.”
Sullivan also noted that on March 22, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., New Hampshire Community Health Centers statewide will be holding outreach and enrollment events at their health centers – so keep an eye on your local calendars for details or contact Bi-State at 228-2830, ext. 160.
While the consumer assisters want to offer convenience to students by holding the enrollment session at NHTI, the public is encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity as well. The NHTI enrollment sessions are two opportunities to get the facts about how to get the healthcare one needs to stay healthy. Don’t forget another benefit of these sessons: you’ll sleep better at night knowing you have taken important steps to protect your financial future.
