The Concord Chorale’s upcoming concert, the first weekend in December, creates an energetic start to the Christmas season, combining traditional and contemporary holiday music for adult and youth choirs, accompanied by percussion and brass ensemble.
The musical theme of the concert, “The Song Am I,” celebrates, according to Kristofer Johnson, music director of the Concord Chorale, “the ability that music and song have to connect us with the vibrant forces of joy, hope and peace in our lives.”
Several musical selections also offer a new interpretation of traditional Christmas carols and an opportunity for the audience to join in.
In addition to its holiday flavor, this winter concert will also feature several active New England composers, including Nicholas White of St Paul’s School in Concord; Gwyneth Walker, a full-time composer living part of the year in Vermont; and Kevin Siegfried of The Boston Conservatory.
In describing the concert focus, Johnson commented, “We are excited to both promote these fine musicians’ work, and to continue to deepen our ongoing relationships with them.”
The 80-member Chorale will also be accompanied by a Youth Chorus, made up of middle school students in the region; by the Riverside Brass Ensemble, a group of professional musicians who perform both classical and lighter works in the New England area; and by percussionist Matthew Redmond and organist Bruce Adami.
Concerts will be held at the South Congregational Church, 27 Pleasant St., on Dec. 6 and 7 at 8 p.m., and Dec. 8 at 3 p.m.
Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for students and seniors, and are available at Merrimack County Savings Bank, Main Street branch, and Bona Fide Green Goods, 35 South Main St., from Chorale members, or by calling 463-5504. To learn more, visit http://www.concordchorale.org.
