“It’s a man’s world.” When James Brown penned that lyric, he might well have been talking about the ultra-competitive, hyper-masculine world of movie trailer voiceovers. In A World is the directorial debut from Lake Bell (Children’s Hospital), who also wrote and starred in the film. Bell plays Carol Solomon, an aspiring voiceover pro struggling to escape her famous father’s shadow. She shows equal aptitude behind the camera and in front of it; we could be witnessing the beginning of the next unknown auteur’s rise to stardom.
The supporting cast is an alt-comedy who’s who, from her Children’s co-stars Ken Marino (one of Hollywood’s most underappreciated comic actors) and Rob Corddry to Michaela Watkins, Demetri Martin and the tragically underutilized Tig Notaro.
We won’t spoil whether or not Bell (as Solomon) successfully brings her strong female voice to the voiceover world, but we can safely say Bell is bringing one to Hollywood – and it’s here to stay.
