When Marshall Crane came back to visit Bishop Brady last year, he was saddened by what he witnessed. When he was in high school, there was so much school spirit and pride emanating from the walls; but today, the enthusiasm is lacking. So he decided to invoke the spirit of beloved coach Frank Monahan to find a way to infuse that enthusiasm and pride into the students at Bishop Brady and all the youth in greater Concord. Fast forward a couple months and the Frank Monahan Foundation is born.
The mission of the Frank Monahan Foundation is to inspire and motivate youth to take their education seriously, visualize their dreams and to make a difference in their community, much like the impact that Monahan had on his students.
“I was very fortunate to play for Coach Monahan. He not only guided me to become a better student-athlete but also a better person,” Crane said. “I wanted to help form a foundation that would give back to our local communities like Coach Monahan did, be a reflection of what Coach Monahan was to everyone when we were in high school.”
The foundation plans to carry out its mission by supporting local schools and youth organizations with various events throughout the year. The first event is the Frank Monahan Foundation Golf Classic, which will take place July 15 at the Concord Country Club. Nazzy from 105.5 JYY will be the emcee and the special guest speaker is Dick Hoyt from Team Hoyt (teamhoyt.com) – a father-son team who compete in marathons and triathlons across the country despite the son’s physical disability. The event will bring together many of Monahan’s former players, coaches, friends and family for a day of golf and remembrance of a great man.
“With a dynamic board of directors, the foundation will guide our youth to take pride in their schools, their communities, their coaches, their teachers, their classrooms, their teammates, and most of all, take pride in themselves,” Crane said.
