The Food Snob received a wildly intriguing email this week tipping us off to a new culinary delicacy in town for one month only. Seems that the Common Man is offering a Thin Mints Avalanche Sundae in partnership with local Girl Scouts. Since we’d yet to lay our hands on any Girl Scout cookies thus far in 2013 – and, let’s face it, because it’s a chance to eat ice cream – we headed down to the Common Man to check it out.
We arrived before the dining room was open for the day, so we did what any normal, reasonable person would do and bellied up to the bar and ordered an ice cream sundae. Then, we dug into the outdated sports-edition Trivial Pursuit cards and waited for our sweet treat.
We figured out which NFL team does not have a logo on its helmets (the Cleveland Browns – duh!) and our sundae arrived shortly thereafter. The heaping bowlful was topped with that old familiar chocolate-covered circular wafer known as the Thin Mint. The cookie rested atop mounds of Common Man-made mint chocolate ice cream, rivers of rich chocolate syrup and a plume of fluffy whipped cream.
Rather than show any sort of restraint or dignity, the Snob set to with vicious spoon thrusts to the heart of the Thin Mint, mashing it to bits and mixing it in thoroughly. We then began demolishing the sundae, stopping just short of upending the bowl and creating a flavorful avalanche of our own directly into our gaping maw.
The ice cream itself was unique; chocolate-based with more than a hint of mint and marshmallow swirls marbled throughout. It came as a surprise to us that the ice cream was mixed in-house; who knew they had a creamery back there?! Throw in the syrup, whipped cream and the creme de la creme, une Petite Menthe, and we had a delicious sundae on our hands (and beard, and a little on our shirt).
We highly recommend the Thin Mints Avalanche Sundae. There’s a limited window to try this, and it’s getting smaller every day (or are we just getting bigger? Don’t even suggest that it’s our ice cream-centric diet!). After all, when you sell a wildly popular food item that is highly sought after, the best business model is to only sell it for one month a year.
