The Concord Police Department gave us access to some recently unearthed police logbooks that are part of its historical collection. The books date back to the turn of the century (that’s 1900 for the iPhone generation), and we think they are a fascinating look at how life in Concord used to be. So, we pulled out a few entries for our readers. Check them out!
Feb. 12, 1940: A complaint from Ernest Morris, Washington St., that sometime since Sun. at 4 o’clock somebody took a white 14 ft. 2-seated $35.00 canoe from his yard. I found out that Kenneth Foote with Arthur Whiting and George Whiting took it and put it on the other side of the river. They were going to keep it until next summer. Gave them until five o’clock Tues. to put it back.
March 8, 1940: A call from Boscawen saying a man was running around the Flatland hollering he wanted a gun to kill somebody. Roy brought in Prosper Papineau drunk. Prosper had a nightmare and was put to bed by two people. Papineau woke up and jumped through a window.
March 17, 1940: James Freeman reports his shanty broken into and tools taken.
May 28, 1940: If the police car is used, the brakes are not good.
June 8, 1940: Had a call that they thought Henry Maynard was dead. Went down and after getting into the house, I woke him up. He was O.K.
Aug. 31, 1940: Francis White wants a trunk looked over through the night. It contains merchandise.
Sept. 27, 1940: Sam Walker called and said if anyone inquires for a pair of glasses, they are at Mrs. Oscar Kelsey’s.
Oct. 28, 1940: Fr. Murphy reports someone letting the air out of his tires while at a scout meeting.
June 11, 1941: A call from Mrs. Cora Magee to go to Fred Noe’s, 36 Merrimack St., in regards to Pet Noe. She said he was covered in blood. Checked and I found that Pet had been shaving and was shaking so much he cut himself. with the razor accidentally.
