A year ago, I was asked by an old friend to join the Concord Area Senior Wellness Team. Not sure what I was getting myself into, I decided to try it, and am proud to say I continue to volunteer with this group that is associated with the Concord Hospital.
As a retired elementary teacher, I spent many years bringing valuable educational information into my classroom to inform those young minds. Now I am working with a team of 10 dynamic inpiduals who volunteer their time and energy to put on a twice monthly activity called “Senior Wellness Morning.” Our goal is to improve and maintain the mental, physical, spiritual and social well-being of the community’s older adults. The teacher is now a student!
The inpiduals on this team are knowledgeable, caring and committed to healthy living. They have welcomed me to the team, and I am learning so much. Their connections to the resources in the community are amazing. At our team meetings, I feel like a student in my former classroom. I am eager to learn what they know.
I look forward to the Senior Wellness Morning activities that happen on the second and fourth Tuesdays each month. The group meets at Horseshoe Pond Place on Commercial Street in Concord. I’ve gotten to know some of the adults attending and enjoy seeing their interactions. I mostly enjoy listening to the great questions the presenters are asked. Our region’s professionals have been generous with their time to provide educational and beneficial topics that can improve each of the attendees’ health and well-being.
I like the idea that my role of a teacher continues. I see our Wellness Mornings as a class room of sorts. I am learning the importance of life-long participation in activities and the health benefits that it provides. I truly think our great programs can educate, enrich and empower the adults in this community. The Senior Wellness Team has enriched my life, so I thank my fellow team members along with my good friend who invited me to join this team of people whom I truly respect.
As we start this New Year, I encourage all older adults out there in the Concord area to join us for a Tuesday Wellness Morning. It starts at 10 a.m. and wraps up before noon. We’d be happy to mail you the monthly newsletter, so call 227-7000, ext. 3660 to make this request. There is always a pot of coffee brewing and the program along with the good company will make your day a better one.
