Come to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Concord at 274 Pleasant St. for an afternoon of Burundian food, drumming, dancing, crafts and community Feb. 3. The church will reverberate with the sounds of drums from Burundi. Along with the Reverend Fulgence Ndagijimana, visiting from Burundi, we will have drummers and dancers from the Concord and Portland, Maine, Burundian refugee communities at our service. Join us after the service for lunch and then an hour of drumming, dancing and singing.
The luncheon and performance are a fund raiser for an AIDS prevention program in Burundi. A suggested donation of $10 per person or $20 per family is requested. You’ll have a chance to taste some traditional Burundian dishes, prepared by the women of the community, along with other African dishes that will be made by adventuresome UU cooks. If you’d like to join in the food preparation, we’ll be in our kitchen cooking Feb. 2.
Lunch will be served right after the service at around 11:45 a.m.; at 12:30 p.m. we will return to the sanctuary to hear the drums, watch the singers and learn about the experiences of the performers, as they tell us about leaving Burundi to start a new life in Concord.
If you’ve been looking for a way to learn more about the refugee experience, this is a great opportunity. UU Friends of Refugees hopes to increase connections between the UU and Burundi communities.
